3 Minute Wonders Research

A 3 Minute Wonder is a short documentary that highlights a topic that is not within the public eye. The videos, evidently, last around 3 minutes and can cover a wide range of topics. The 3 Minute Wonders have been broadcast on Channel 4 since 2006 and have occasionally features celebrities, such as Karl Pilkington. The aim of a 3 Minute Wonder is to bring a topic that is not in the public eye to a wider audience in a short time frame. These can be seen as a short introduction into the topic for those who were not aware of it before.

This is Our Youth - One Note Music
This 3MW explores the music genre known as 'one note music'. The short shows 2 teenagers from Brixton performing a song they have made in one of their bedrooms, whilst also talking about why they love the genre and why they perform their songs. From the short I have learned that there are always young people who are attempting to be groundbreaking in their chosen industry, although some are more groundbreaking than others. This 3MW is presented in an interactive documentary style, as the two teenagers are telling us their views and opinions.

This is Our Youth - Extreme Retro
This 3MW explores a group of girls who prefer to dress in 'extreme' retro clothes from Victorian times. Taking place in East London, the short shows interviews of the girls and also their peers, voicing their opinions on them. The short has taught me that there are always new fashion trends among young people. Although the short seems scripted in some form, it is presented in a way which feels genuine and unbiased towards the emotions it is conveying to the audience. However, a sympathetic view is established in the short, as I personally felt rather sorry for how the girls are treated by others for doing something they enjoy.

The Wall - Pure Evil
This 3MW is about a spray paint artist who goes by the name 'Pure Evil'. The video shows him painting a new piece and he also shows his techniques for creating spray paint art. I've always been interested in spray paint artwork, such as Banksy, so this 3MW was very interesting to me. I've learnt from it how some artists work, either free-hand or through use of stencils, whilst creating their art. However, I felt that the legality of graffiti art was not really touched upon throughout, which to me would have engaged me more, as it is a common moral question which is raised.

Market Research
As 3MW were all broadcast on Channel 4, it seems obvious that they show a wide range of documentaries. From looking at the TV listings, C4 dominates the peak time (around 6pm - 9pm) with factual programming, from shows like 'Coach Trip' to Party Political Broadcasts, especially in the last few months. When compared to other channels, such as BBC1, who primarily broadcast factual programs during the daytime, with shows like 'Fake Britain', they show very little factual programs in the peak time-slot. According to BARB (Broadcasters Audience Research Board), factual programs hold a 11.9% share of total audience viewing.
